Collection: Yves Gaucher

Yves Gaucher (1934-2000) was well-known as a printmaker and painter working with abstraction. He was born in Montreal and attended the École des beaux-arts de Montréal from 1954-56 before studying printmaking with Albert Dumouchel and focusing predominantly on printmaking for a number of years. His work was influenced both by his travels and by the works of other musicians and artists, including his print series En Hommage à Webern created in homage to musician Anton Webern, and his painting series Jericho: une allusion à Barnett Newman inspired by the painting Jericho by Barnett Newman.

In 1978, Gaucher worked at Open Studio to create a large-scale lithograph in continuation of his Jericho series that employs the same minimalist blocks of solid colour and use of trapezoid forms. Gaucher’s work is held in numerous collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal; and the Museum of Modern Art; New York.
