Collection: Gordon Smith

Gordon Smith (1919 – 2020) was an English-born Canadian artist known for expanding the dialogue between abstraction and representation. Over a 75-year career, Smith became a key figure in contemporary Canadian art and was named to the Order of Canada in 1996. His work is held in numerous collections nationally and internationally including the National Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario, MoMA, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

In the 1970s, Smith worked with Open Studio to create four prints, one of which, Mountains, was initiated as a publishing project by the studio. Smith’s prints created during his time at Open Studio focus primarily on mountains and sea, reflecting his love of the landscape around Vancouver.
