Collection: Doug Guildford
Doug Guildford is a largely self-taught Canadian visual artist, born in Nova Scotia in 1948. Based in Toronto since the 1980s, he continues to spend summers on Nova Scotia’s remote coast, where he shares an old farmhouse with his partner, writer Don Hannah.
His multidisciplinary practice includes drawing, printmaking, object-making, and large-scale crochet works. These labour-intensive projects serve as metaphor, journal, and meditation—bridging material exploration with personal and ecological themes.
Guildford is a long-time member of Open Studio in Toronto, where he has produced numerous series of etchings and screenprints that favour process and variation over singular finished works.
He has exhibited widely in Canada, with solo shows at the Burnaby Art Gallery (BC), Grenfell Campus Art Gallery (NL), and Saint Francis Xavier University Art Gallery (NS), among others. Group exhibitions include the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Centre Materia (QC), and McMaster Museum of Art (ON).
His work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, and Toronto Arts Council. He has held residencies at St. Michael’s Printshop, NSCAD, and the Atlantic Centre for the Arts.
