About Vanessa Maltese's Print Subscription: Multidisciplinary in breadth, Vanessa Maltese's practice deploys various forms of visual trickery as a way of questioning the relationship between perception and truth. Maltese is interested in the plasticity of the brain, and how conflicts of perception have the power to change our methods of thinking, even in common everyday experiences.

The title for the screenprint, 'Torn between', makes reference to the ripped paper represented in the artwork itself and brings into context––through the use of trompe l'oeil––Maltese's interest in employing bi-stable visual illusions to challenge the mind's assumptions.

Artist Bio: Vanessa Maltese (b. 1988, Toronto, Canada) received a BFA from OCAD University in 2010 and has exhibited work in solo and group exhibitions across North America. Recent exhibitions include, Cooper Cole, Toronto (2021); Mickey Gallery, Chicago (2020); Night Gallery, Los Angeles (2019); The Power Plant, Toronto (2018); the National Gallery Library and Archives, Ottawa (2017); Carl Louie, London ON (2017); Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York (2016); Greenpoint Terminal Gallery, New York (2016) and Art Museum of the University of Toronto, Toronto (2016). Maltese was the recipient of the 2012 RBC Canadian Painting Competition national prize and in 2018 attended the Glenfiddich AIR Programme as the Canadian Artist in Residence. Maltese currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
