Multidisciplinary in breadth, Vanessa Maltese's practice deploys various forms of visual trickery as a way of questioning the relationship between perception and truth. Maltese is interested in the plasticity of the brain, and how conflicts of perception have the power to change our methods of thinking, even in common everyday experiences.

The title for the screenprint, 'Torn between', makes reference to the ripped paper represented in the artwork itself and brings into context––through the use of trompe l'oeil––Maltese's interest in employing bi-stable visual illusions to challenge the mind's assumptions.
